Welcome to McGhee in Magee!

 Hello Friends!

Ulster University’s Magee Campus in Derry-Londonderry. Picture Martin McKeown

My name is Toni (McGhee) 😉, and I'm a second year student in Ulster University's (you guessed it) Magee campus. I've created this space to share exactly what it's like to study in the amazing city of Derry.

Here's a little about me: I am a commuter! I live a short 30 min drive from campus, which definitely has its pros and cons. At 22, I'm a little older than most of my classmates, and my path to studying marketing hasn't exactly been straightforward.

Back in 2022 I started in Ulster University Belfast studying Textile Art, and Fashion Design. After pushing through my first year I realized it wasn't a very good fit for me and made the difficult decision to step away. After a year of soul-searching and working full-time, I found my way back to university, this time at Magee, studying Marketing, and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I know what it's like to juggle (and struggle with) studying, commuting, working a part-time job, and trying to maintain a social life. It can be overwhelming, and it's not always easy, but that’s exactly why I wanted to make this blog.

Here we’ll cover everything from surviving long lecture days and late-night study sessions, to the best local spots for coffee, study breaks and making memories. My hope is that by sharing a little of my journey, you’ll feel a little less alone and a lot more inspired to make the most of your time at Magee.

Thanks for stopping by!
Be sure to come back next week to read all about why I almost gave up on uni, and why I'm glad I didn't.

The Truth About Juggling Work, Uni and Life This Festive Season

As the title suggests, this blog is a little different. I can give all the tips and tricks I want but the truth is, sometimes it's tough going.  I work a part-time job in retail, and during festive season, that also doubles as deadline time, it's hard. Social life be damned this festive period is about to be a sucky one. With 3 assignments due, Christmas shoppers in full swing and my rota becoming increasingly demanding I have no idea where I think I'm going to get the time. But I know I will. I'm trying to be chill.  Christmas in retail is a funny one. Stuck listening to the same Christmas songs on repeat (I know every word) and for the most part, the customers are great. Most people are polite, they understand you're trying your best to deal under pressure. But, once in a while there's someone who thinks you personally are responsible for the stock levels on the shop floor, or once someone even asked me if they can get staff discounts for doing the staff'...

The Procrastinator's Guide to Getting Stuff Done (Eventually)

If you're reading this instead of doing what you should be doing, then you're in exactly the right place.  The truth is if procastination was a sport I would be an olympic gold medalist. My brain has this amazing way of prioritising all the wrong things. I will tidy my whole room top to bottom and fill ten bin bags full of clothes for the charity shop before I'll start the assignment that's due in 2 days. WHAT IS THAT ABOUT? Truth is I've spent more time than I care to admit putting off this blog. And the worst part? I know I'm doing it. I'll lay and feel stressed about how much work I need to do and instead of just doing it, I'll stick Stranger Things on and rewatch it in anticipation of the new season coming out. I can't even relax and enjoy it either because my mind is too focused on the mountain of work I have yet to begin. It's self destructive really, but I'm trying to be better, and I want to let you  know how to be better too.  So...

Why I Almost Gave Up On Uni (and Why I'm Glad I Didn't)

How taking a year out helped me fall back in love with learning.  Welcome back!  So, as the title suggests, back in 2022 I was ready to throw in the towel and give up on education altogether. After pushing through my first year, I'd simply had enough. I decided to hit pause for a while and took a position working with the Civil Service (complete with my cute little office outfits and all). It was a really great year for me: I learned so much, met some amazing people and gained a lot of confidence. But, whilst I loved my job, I knew I didn't want to do it forever. I wanted to study again, I wanted to be doing something I was really truly passionate about, and that's how I ended up here, back in university, this time in Magee, and this time studying Marketing. But I'm getting ahead of myself... so let's rewind.  When you're 18 and finishing A-levels, it felt like school really frowned upon anyone taking a year out, and (for me anyway) you’re almost pressured into ...
